Wartburg College

Wartburg offers students total college experience

WAVERLY, Iowa — Wartburg College doesn’t just promise a good education, it delivers.

“Wartburg was a good option for me, because after being in big classes at a state university, I knew I needed personable instructors and faculty,” said transfer student Brody Suddendorf. “I wanted a classroom environment where I could easily interact with my professors as well as my fellow classmates.”

The Wartburg experience isn’t confined to the classroom, but includes cocurricular activities and community service.

“It’s hard to find a college that meets all of your expectations,” said sophomore Mackenzie Benson. “But, I promise you, Wartburg can.”

Wartburg prepares its students well

The national average for acceptance at medical schools is 37 percent, but for Wartburg graduates it’s 92 percent and 91 percent for dentistry. In many health-related disciplines, it’s 100 percent.

Wartburg strives to achieve high standards in all 50 majors, led by biology, business administration, communication arts, elementary education and music education.

The faculty understands not all knowledge comes from lectures and textbooks. They put a unique emphasis on hands-on learning and field experiences, and the four-week May Term is an ideal opportunity to study abroad (40 percent of Wartburg graduates study abroad).

“The faculty are very helpful,” said recent graduate Aaron Schutte. “They tell you what you need to know and send you out with the tools that you need.”

Wartburg students make the most of their college experience.

One-third participates in the No. 16 overall NCAA Division III sports program with three 2008-09 national titles (wrestling and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field).

One-fourth are involved in a music program with national and international tours.

The theater group has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The award-winning TV station and newspaper boast state-of-the-art equipment, and the online news site “The Circuit” was named one of the 20 best on any campus.

All told, 80 student groups cover the gamut of possible interests.

Wartburg also is synonymous with service.

It is one of five colleges honored by the Washington Center for community service. Students initiated 20 national service trips during breaks last year. Among all chapters of Break Away, the alternative break organization, Wartburg is third in the percentage of students doing community service.

Campus takes on a new look

All that and a campus with first-class facilities.

Ten buildings have been constructed or renovated in the past decade, including a new student center, library, science center and residence halls.

The crown jewel may be The W, a 200,000-square foot recreation center with a six-lane pool, water slide, five multipurpose courts, racquetball, climbing wall and a 6,500-square-foot fitness center.
