Upper Iowa University

Upper Iowa University's forward thinking rooted in 151 years of history

Founded in 1857, Upper Iowa University is a private, not-for-profit university providing accredited undergraduate and graduate degree programs through multiple flexible delivery options.  UIU offers higher education and leadership development opportunities to approximately 6,000 students—nationally and internationally—at its traditional campus in Fayette, Iowa; at learning centers worldwide; through an independent study program; and via an award-winning online program.

Upper Iowa's traditional residential campus in Fayette (in the Upper Northeast area of Iowa) has a unique eight-week term curriculum with two-at-a-time classes to enhance student learning, boasts a 14:1 student/teacher ratio, offers a safe setting with less distraction, and has the only NCAA Division II athletic program in the state of Iowa. Peacock Athletics sponsors 11 sports, including football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, wrestling, softball, women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s golf.

UIU students are also able to graduate with less debt due to a large variety of need-based financial aid packages and merit-based scholarships available.  A recent study by the Iowa Student Loan Commission indicates that the average Upper Iowa student graduates with less debt than students who attended any other private or public university in the state.

UIU-Fayette has over 35 degree programs to choose from, which includes our popular Marketing, Teaching, and Conservation Management degree programs, plus new degree programs in Information Technology,  Forensics, RN to BSN, Master of Education, and Master of Higher Education Administration. New programs are constantly under development as the university seeks to provide degree options that add value to a UIU degree, and provide superior training for the 21st century job market.

For over six years, Upper Iowa University has had international centers in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore, working with international partners to deliver accredited, high-quality American undergraduate and graduate degree programs.  Our international program continues to grow and includes a robust foreign exchange program, as well as several study abroad opportunities.

Upper Iowa is especially proud of its service to military personnel and their families, offering them a wide variety of educational opportunities tailored to fit their dynamic lifestyle.  The university is a Yellow Ribbon institution, meaning that veterans and active military members receive substantial financial aid to help finance their higher education plans.

As other institutions scale back building plans in response to the current economy, Upper Iowa has invested nearly $75 million to continue to provide the best possible learning environment for our students. The fall of 2010 will see the opening of a new student center, new suite-style residential housing, and a state-of-the-art liberal arts building. This is just the first phase of a three-phase building program that will ensure that Upper Iowa students have access to the best learning technology, and the best living and recreational facilities in the region. It is an exciting time to be a Peacock!
